Event Date/Time:
Bay area saxophonist Steve Feierabend, Portland trumpeter Bryant Allard, and special guest pianist Randy Porter, all originally from the San Diego area, will reunite to perform as the Pow- erhouse Quintet, a group formed in 2000 by Bryant Allard, Steve Feierabend, and New York bassist Bim Strasberg. Bryant and Steve’s musical adventure started almost 40 years ago when, while still in high school, they discovered jazz and decided to form their own band. Having grown up together in Del Mar, they have been good friends even longer, going back to grade school. In August of 1978, after graduating from high school, the two moved to Boston together to further their musical studies. Over the years, they continued to play professionally but went in their own directions, settling in different parts of the country. Only on the rare occasion when their travels coincide do they have the opportunity to perform together. These rare per- formances have been a revelation: despite their different paths, they have found there is an uncanny empathy in their musical sensibilities, and this fuels a desire to continue performing together.
They will be playing some of their music from their 2002 CD release “Reunion” (recorded at guitarist Peter Sprague’s Spragueland Studios in San Diego) as well as many other more recent compositions. Their music re ects their similar backgrounds, which are rooted in the music of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and others of that generation.
